After fertilisation, which happens at or near ovulation, the embryo spends several days travelling to the uterus and developing before it can attach. Implantation is generally described as occurring 6 to 12 days after ovulation, most commonly between days 8 and 10.

The calculator marks the full range and highlights the middle of it. There is no way to narrow this from a calendar, because implantation produces no reliable outward sign.

What implantation means for testing

hCG production begins after implantation and then roughly doubles every couple of days. A urine test needs enough of it to cross the test's threshold, which takes another two to three days.

This is the whole reason early tests can be negative in a pregnancy that is progressing normally. If implantation happened at the late end of the range, hCG may not be detectable until after a period is already missed.

About implantation bleeding and symptoms

Some people report light spotting or cramping around this time and describe it as implantation bleeding. It is not a reliable indicator: many pregnancies involve no spotting at all, and spotting at this point in a cycle has other common explanations.

No symptom, and no calculator, can confirm that implantation has occurred. Only a pregnancy test taken at an appropriate time can indicate a pregnancy, and a healthcare professional can confirm it.

A worked example

Ovulation on 15 March 2027.

Implantation window: 6 to 12 days after, so 21 to 27 March 2027.
Most common days: 8 to 10 days after, so 23 to 25 March 2027.
hCG would begin rising from around 23 March at the earliest.
A test on 25 March may be too early if implantation happened late in the window.

This spread is exactly why a single early negative test result is not conclusive.
